What is BioMat therapy?

BioMat therapy combines far infrared radiation (FIR), mild pulsed electromagnetic frequencies (PEMF), red light therapy, and the Schumann resonance to facilitate its therapeutic effects (*see citations below for published BioMat research and a more extensive list of its therapeutic indications):

FIR is based on the principle of radiant heat transfer. With respect to the complete electromagnetic radiation spectrum, the infrared radiation (IR) band covers the wavelength range of 750 nm–100 μm, frequency range of 400 THz–3 THz, and photon energy range of 12.4 meV– 1.7 eV. Infrared radiation, which lies in the range of 3 to 100 micrometres on the electromagnetic spectrum, is emitted by a heat source, such as a far-infrared heating panel. At the cellular level, the underlying biophysical mechanisms of the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with living cells can be framed in terms of altered cell membrane potentials and altered mitochondrial metabolism. Click here for a more comprehensive analysis of the biological effects of FIR.

Mild PEMF exposure has been shown to produce clinically significant analgesic (antinociceptive) effects, with research indicating therapeutic efficacy for a vast range of musculoskeletal and inflammatory concerns. (The citations on this article are particularly impressive for further reading!)

Red light therapy – or photobiomodulation (PBM) – targets the mitochondria of our cells which can absorb red and near-infrared light. This process enhances adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production (an essential output of Krebs cycle), boosting cellular energy and promoting optimal functioning. Beyond improved mitochondrial function, PBM has demonstrated efficacy and safety for skin rejuvenation, intradermal collagen density, and complexion. Click here to access Wunsch and Matuschka’s controlled trial that determined the efficacy of red and near-infrared light treatment in ultrasonographic and profilometric assessed skin concerns.

The Schumann Resonance, with a natural frequency of 7.83 Hz, is an alpha/theta brainwave frequency associated with improved cognitive function, reduced stress and anxiety, enhanced immune function, and improved sleep. The nervous system transmits electrochemical signals that can be acutely influenced by external frequencies such as the Schumann resonance in an attempt to alter maladaptive neurological processes such as chronic pain.

Health Benefits of BioMat Therapy

BioMat therapy may offer several potential benefits, such as:

  • Assisting musculoskeletal pain relief through far infrared heat and mild PEMF.
  • Producing analgesic effects to help with temporary relief of minor pain.
  • Supporting neurotransmission and improving cellular communication.
  • Enhancing circulation by increasing blood flow to tissues.
  • Promoting cellular repair through tailored PEMF frequencies.
  • Facilitating detoxification by promoting sweating and lymphatic flow.
  • Improving ATP (cellular energy) production, which may support overall energy and vitality.
  • Enhancing absorption of nutrients through improved circulation and detoxification support.

These benefits may vary from person to person, and BioMat therapy is typically used as a complementary practice within a greater treatment protocol.

What to Expect During a BioMat Therapy Session

BioMat therapy at Revital Health involves sitting or lying on a mat which emits a combination of far infrared rays, mild PEMF, and red light. You can adjust the heat and pulse settings to your desired level according to whether you’re presenting with acute musculoskeletal pain or neurophysiological stress. The session typically lasts between 30 to 45 minutes, during which we’d encourage you to take advantage of the quiet by resting and taking an unplugged moment to recharge, though electronics and other entertainment can be brought into the session. The gentle heat – combined with the PEMF and red light – may promote a sense of calm and temporary relief from discomfort while on the mat, and post-session you may notice a reduction in stress and tension in your body. We’d recommend taking it easy for a few hours afterwards, though there is no need to avoid strenuous activity should you need to dash off immediately after.

Who Can Benefit from BioMat Therapy?

BioMat therapy may be suitable for a wide range of individuals, including those experiencing:

  • Minor muscle or joint pain
  • Stress and tension
  • Recovery from physical activity or injury
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Individuals seeking immune system support
  • Those looking to promote general wellness and relaxation

*BioMat therapy is not intended to replace conventional medical treatments, and it is recommended to consult with a healthcare provider before beginning any new wellness practice.

Frequently Asked Questions About Biomat Therapy

Does BioMat reduce inflammation?

Yes, the BioMat is believed to help reduce inflammation by delivering infrared heat deep into the body. This heat can improve circulation, which may help alleviate inflammation and pain in areas like minor joint pain or minor sprains. It may also promote muscle relaxation, which can further aid in reducing inflammation and discomfort.

What is the BioMat treatment?

The BioMat treatment involves lying on a mat that emits infrared heat and negative ions. The mat’s computerised control panel allows users to adjust the heat level to their comfort. This treatment is designed to promote muscle relaxation, reduce stress, alleviate minor joint pain, and support overall wellness. The BioMat is often used in holistic health practices and can be part of a broader wellness routine.

Does the BioMat help with anxiety?

Yes, the BioMat may help with anxiety by promoting muscle relaxation and reducing stress. The gentle infrared heat and the negative ions produced by the mat can create a calming effect, which may help lower anxiety levels. Additionally, improved sleep and relaxation from the BioMat can contribute to better mental health and reduced anxiety.

How deep does the BioMat penetrate?

The BioMat’s infrared heat can penetrate up to 6 inches into the body, reaching deep into muscles, joints, and tissues. This deep penetration is believed to enhance circulation, alleviate muscle spasms, and reduce pain in minor sprains and minor joint pain. The depth of heat penetration is one of the key features that distinguish the BioMat from regular heating pads.

Is a BioMat just a heating pad?

No, a BioMat is more than just a heating pad. While it does provide heat, it uses infrared heat that penetrates deeper into the body compared to standard heating pads. The BioMat also employs targeted electromagnetic frequencies and includes a computerised control panel for precise temperature and frequency control. These additional features may also offer the benefits of muscle relaxation, improved immune system functioning, and enhanced overall well-being.
