A blog to make you younger: Part 1

The important key to anti-ageing is physiological as much as it is metaphysical.

Physiological:

We can’t understand the ageing process until we understand that it begins with our CELLS.

Have you heard of cellular senescence? It’s a pretty large step in the process of understanding ageing.

In cellular biology; senescence is a process by which a cell ages and permanently stops dividing but does not die.

Over time, large numbers of old (or senescent cells) can build up in tissues throughout the body. Old cells can create dysfunction in body systems which can present as the presentation of accelerated ageing!

Cellular apoptosis (or programmed cell death) is a vital component to healthy cellular ageing.

Overall.. Anti-aging processes are the result of getting the balance of these two (cellular death and cellular regeneration) right!

Old cells die, new cells form and this is how we remain young at a cellular level.

Remember.. cells make up tissues –> tissues make up organs –> organs make up systems –> systems form our human body!

So where do we start when it comes to balancing senescent cells and influencing ageing on a cellular level?

1. Identifying cellular dysfunction via Organic Acids & Metabolomics testing procedures facilitated by our Naturopaths

2. Testing your age via cellular epigenetic & biologic testing. Want to know more? Give us a call or email to find out how we can determine your epigenetic cellular age!

3Fix your lifestyle habits that enhance cellular damage and ageing: Examples include removing the consumption of pro-oxidative foods (i.e. alcohol, high sugar intake and processed foods) and substances (i.e. smoking – both cigarettes and vaping, drug intake), sedentary lifestyle.. you get the gist!

4. Change your diet: Did you know that consumption of the Mediterranean Diet has been attributed to the longest lifespan amongst certain researched communities? Studies show it is due to the high nutrient value enhancing antioxidant capacity in the body.

Staples of a Mediterranean Diet include..

  • vegetables & fruits (organic, pesticide free)
  • extra virgin olive oil
  • wholegrain breads and cereals
  • legumes or beans (e.g. chickpeas, kidney beans or lentils)
  • nuts and seeds
  • fish and seafood
  • onion, garlic and other herbs and spices (e.g. oregano, coriander, cumin etc.)
  • very limited processed food consumption

5. Incorporate biohacking therapies: What do intermittent fasting, ice therapy, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, Infrared Sauna & high intensity interval training (HIIT) exercise all have in common?

They cause a ‘hormetic stress’ in the body.

We’re talking about the idea that short, intermittent bursts of certain stressors (hormetic stressors) can actually trigger a cascade of cellular processes that enhance overall health, slow ageing, and make you more resilient to future stress (both physical and mental.

Each of these therapies has their own cellular mechanisms in how they cause a hormetic stress and encourage beneficial physiological adaptations, but here’s a sneak peak explanation:

Intermittent Fasting:

Cellular repair: Cells remove more wastes that would cause cellular damage

Gene expression: Changes occur in genes that promote longevity and prevent disease

Hormonal changes: Drop in insulin levels prevents diabetes and may boost longevity

Fights inflammation: Intermittent fasting decreases inflammation

Protects against oxidative stress: Prevents cell damage due to unstable molecules  called free radicals

Cold Therapy:

Produces cold shock proteins: Cold shock proteins are involved at various points in the protein synthesis process including transcription, supercoiling of DNA, and initiation of translation – VITAL for healthy DNA & cellular replication!

Brown adipose tissue: There are two types of fat in the body – white fat and brown fat. Brown fat gets its colour through the much higher density of iron-containing, energy-producing mitochondria. Activating brown fat has shown a multitude of health benefits, such as prevention of atherosclerosis, reduced triglycerides and cholesterol levels improved glucose homeostasis and insulin sensitivity!

6. Herbs & Supplements to support

And finally.. we discuss the ever-evolving topic of ‘anti-ageing’ supplements.

Remember.. in order to be an efficient ‘anti-ageing’ product; it MUST have a positive influence on improving cellular health (so, do your research!).

Our favourite anti-aging supplements:

NAD+ (Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide): A critical coenzyme found in every cell of the body, and responsible for transferring energy from one cell to another. It is critical to protecting cells from oxidative stress and DNA damage.

Get it at the clinic! Quicksilver Liposomal NAD+ Gold 30ml $75.00

Quercetin: A plant polyphenol with extreme antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and senolytic capabilities (remember earlier when we were discussing senescent cells?)

Get it at the clinic! Liposomal Quercetin + Zinc 200ml $60.00

Glutathione: Also known as ‘the mother of all anti-oxidants’ that is produced right here inside our bodies! It’s role is to help combat oxidative stress that could damage our mitochondria! It helps to neutralise toxins, reduces inflammation and add the ‘plump’ to our skin.

Get it at the clinic! Designs for Health Liposomal Glutathione 50ml $50.00

Bioavailable multi-vitamins: Cells need vitamins and minerals to function optimally! Each individual has their own cellular requirements. By testing the functional capacity of your mitochondria we can develop personalised, highly bioavailable nutrient formulas to fix any imbalance in your cellular functioning!

Get it at the clinic! Variable pricing + Consultation required.

Resveratrol-containing herbal medicines: Japanese Knotweed, Green Tea, Curcumin (Turmeric), Grape Seed..

Remember when we spoke about the importance of cellular apoptosis (programmed cell death)?

Well.. Resveratrol has been shown to ameliorate oxidative stress, relieve the inflammatory reaction, improve mitochondrial function, and regulate apoptosis!

Get it at the clinic! Variable pricing + Consultation required.

Omega-3 fatty acids: Due to the ability of inflammation to accelerate ageing and cellular damage; omega-3 fatty acids can contribute to anti-aging capacity by inhibiting an enzyme called cyclooxygenase (COX), which produces the prostaglandin hormones that spark inflammation!

Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) is a major structural component grey matter in the brain – attributing to its ability to enhance brain health!

At high doses; the DHA component of an omega-3 fatty acid has also been shown to enhance cognitive function and encourage mood regulation.

Get it at the clinic! Orthoplex Clinical Lipids 2:1 120c $70.60

*Our fish oil range ensures third-party testing for over 460 environmental pollutants and contaminants.

Methelyene Blue: Loved by Revital staff (but not yet by the TGA..)

Heinrich Caro, a German chemist, first synthesised methylene blue in 1876. Historically, it was used to treat methemoglobinemia. This is a condition in which the blood loses its ability to carry oxygen through the body.

In modern day use; Methylene Blue is used as a nootropic supplement which works directly on the Krebs Cycle and Electron Transport Chain (The function of the Electron Transport Chain is to transfer energy from the electron carriers to even more ATP molecules, the “batteries” which power work within the cell!).

Our friends & co-workers over in America have designed prescription-grade Methelyene Blue trochi’s (dissolvable tablets) that we will soon display in our clinic.

Stay tuned for Part 2: Metaphysical!

Thank you so much for your support in 2022.
